Just because the story of T’Challa and the mystical country of Wakanda has been shared with the world doesn’t mean that we, as an audience, have seen all that can be seen. What does that mean? It means that the team behind Black Panther has plenty of behind-the-scenes featurettes that will take audiences deeper into Ryan Coogler’s cinematic phenomenon.

Many of the scenes in the film, whether they took place in the fictional country of Wakanda or in the real world, looked larger than life. One of the most notable of these scenes was the high-speed car chase and fight that took place on the streets of Seoul, South Korea as Okoye, Nakia, and T’Challa chased after Ulysses Klaue and his goons in an attempt to capture him for crimes against Wakanda.

The VFX company that helped bring this scene to life, Luma Pictures, has released a reel which shows how much detail went into each shot for the sequence, no matter how fast it needed to be. The whole setting, from cars to civilians to buildings to flying debris, all had to be perfectly created in order to make the scene run smoothly, as shown in the video with the digital rendering paired against the final cut.

Luma Pictures VFX Supervisor Brendan Seals spoke about how much detail went into keeping the scene continuous and accurate:

“We had to damage the Lexus throughout the sequence with bullet hits, damages to the windshield and Panther’s claw marks, and so we built several versions of the car in various damaged states to play out continuity across the sequence. One of the most thrilling shots involved Klaue firing the sonic disruptor at Panther, causing the Lexus LC-500 to instantly obliterate into hundreds of pieces.”

Thanks to the careful direction of Ryan Coogler and the talents of the pros at Luma Pictures, the scene ended up looking seamless. Luma Animation Supervisor Raphael A. Pimental spoke about the scene, saying the following:

“There were just a lot of moving parts (literally) and we hand-keyed most of the car pieces. That way we had full control and the ability to address very specific, art-directed client notes…”
